Kate,
It's common for those rocker switches to fall apart. The plastic base is
snapped into the bezel and this is a common occurance (in my experience).
Sometime the tab that holds it together breaks off or else everything just
gets loose from constant use. When the back fell of it probably touched
ground, hence the smoke. If you can find the inner pieces (a small spring,
a nylon piece and a copper contact) you may be able to reassemble it and
superglue it at the tabs (top and bottom). Make sure you assemble it the
right way around and test that it still works correctly using an ohmeter
before gluing it. Label what wire goes where before you pull them off.
On the bearings... it's not like belly buttons... you need both....'-)
