That may work OK if you really don't want to remove the shox to test them.
The best way is to remove the shock, wrap a cloth around it and put it in a
vise, taking care not to crush it too much. ;-) Then, move the lever arm up
and down thru it's full range of motion. If it gives nice, even resistance
both ways and there is no oil leaking all over the place, the shock is fine.
If it feels jerky, it's Peter C. time.
BTW, when I was still driving a TR4A IRS, I had a bad lever shock arm on one
corner. Every time the bolt came off the arm, that corner of the car would
act like a bucking bronco! I knew exactly what happened within minutes. I
was just a kid at the time, and that may have been when I discovered what a
lock washer is for.
