A few weeks ago, we in the Chicago/Milwaukee are had a kickass winter
storm, and got about 18' of snow that day. I had an early flight,
Milwaukee, through Chicago, to San Jose. I left for the Milwaukee
airport at 4:30 am, in my 4x4 Dodge 3/4 tom, CLub Cab, Cummins Turbo
Diesel Urban Assault Vehicle. (I live exactly in between the 2 airports)
As we got on the plane, they assured us we'd go as scheduled.
Immediately after take off from Milwaukee, on the 15 minute flight to
CHicago, OHare closes its runways. The oilt's chlice was divert to
Louisville KY, or Rockford IL. We land at Rockford, which is such a
podunk airport, they don't even have a jeyway... so we were trapped on
the plane. We were stuck there in the blizzard about 3 or 4 hours. You
know how they "de-ice" planes nowadays? Well, apparently Rockford had no
such capabilities. So, when OHare finally had scraped clean a runway, we
took off from Rockford (with no de-icing, despite sitting on a taxiway
in a raging snowstorm all that time) and landed in Chicago. My San Jose
flight was cancelled. I yried to get a flight back to Milwaukee (where
mu truck was parked) and that got cancelled too.
So far, I'd been at 3 airports and never been more than 90 miles from my
house... in fact, we had triangulated it. So, off to Avis to see what
they had that could get me back the 90 miles to Milwaukee through the
blizzard, to retrieve my truck, and then again, drive 45 miles back home
(through the blizzard).
Guees what they had to rent me? Yep... an Aztec. It's 4 wheel (or maybe
better described as all wheel) drive. It was comfortable, and road
worthy... but ugly as a monkey's ass. Got me to Milwaukee though. I was
just hoping nobody I knew saw me driving it.
