I learned a new tech tip today.
Have any of you with the early Spridgets ever get bothered by the dash
light eminating thru the red or blue jewel lenses on the speedo and
tach?
This drives me crazy because you think the ign light and/or high beam
lights are on when it is just the gauge light sneaking past what used to
seal the jewel lens.
So I took apart the speedo and tach, removed what was left of the white
rubber like stuff around the jewel, placed some black heat shrink tubing
over the jewel (about a 1/2" length) heat shrunk it with a Bic lighter
but I used a 1/4" bolt
inserted in the heat shrink tube as not to distort the opposite end
where the light tube goes.
It takes a bit of patience to refit the black tube over the heat shrink
tube but it does the trick. No more gauge illumination glow sneaking
through the jewel lenses.
It's the little things that bother me that I just HAVE to fix.
And if you have your tach apart, now is a good time to add an extra
small ground wire from one of the guts to housing screws and ground the
guts to something. The guts are mounted on a rubber gasket and grounded
to the housing. If your tach jumps, acts squirrely, or has a mind of
it's own, add a ground wire. It always fixes mine.
