Hi Sue,
Before you rush out and purchase hubs and axles, I would check the hubs
on the wire wheels. Inside them there are splines that wear. The wheel
hub and axle hub are different depths, so if there is wear you will find
a ridge inside the wheel. If you find a ridge I wouldn't bother with it
because they will be bad most likely. There are specs on how bad this
ridge is to wheither they are usable or not. But in my experience it
has always been if they were given to you they are mostly likely bad.
Take them to a British shop and they can tell you if they are good or
not. There are a couple up in Sac. If you bring them to one of our
meets I can show you.
I do like the look and feel of Wires, and have them on Puddles. They
sure dress up a old car. But they can be a expensive project when any
are bad. If a wheel hub starts to wear, then the associated axle hub
will wear the same amount. Now if you rotate your tires, guess what?
The bad wheel hub will wear the good hub it is placed on very quickly to
it's own wear pattern. The hub it was removed from, also worn from the
bad wheel, will now start wearing out the other wheel. For this reason
I don't rotate my tires on Puddles. In fact, when I have tire work done
I stand there and make them mark which corner it came from.
Wheel ballance is another problem. Most shop emplyees have never seen a
real wire wheel. They haven't got a clue how to ballance them. I have
taken my rims to the best tire shop in Modesto, and they still screwed
up the ballance of the wires by not correctly putting them on the
machine. Some shops that know what a true wire wheel is and won't even
touch them. The will warp real easy when an installer removes and
installs a new tire if he isn't careful.
But after all that I love the look they give a plan Bugeye from the side
view. Especially with chrome ones.
