I have gasoline collecting on the bottom of the jets on my stock SUs
(Mk IV
Sprite). I replaced the rear dashpot from a parts carb I was given, it had
frozen/siezed and gave symptoms of an intake leak. Then I left the car at home
for a few months when I moved for school and had them serviced by the local Brit
car guy before I drove it to my new home this holiday weekend. After I adjusted
the timing so I could even see the timing mark (it was advanced above the
steering rack), I still smelled fumes. A terribly short investigation concluded
when I found the jets wet. I ran them in a full turn each (it was also
criminally rich) and it runs better, maybe a touch too lean but better.
So, what are the leading causes of the gasoline leak, and what's needed
for
repair? I'm, shall we say, curious since both carbs began leaking at the same
time, so I think other than natural forces may be at work.
