I had a minor problem this weekend. I was about 100 miles from home, at a
Scout camp, and all of a sudden my Midget was louder than the camp pickup
truck with it's bad exhaust pipe! I blew out the plug that was installed
when the PO removed the EGR valve from the exhaust manifold.
I visited the camp maintenance building where I was given free reign to use
anything necessary to fix the car. I found a brass plumbing plug (way to
coarse threads) and ground it down to fit in the hole. Then I glued it in
with muffler repair putty. The putty hardened all day Saturday, and I made
it home Saturday night with no further problems. (BTW, the car ran great all
weekend!)
Sunday, it was off to autocross, and as I was pulling up to the staging area,
the plug blew out again. So, I think I will find a correct diameter bolt
that fits close to the hole size and use something to seal it in.
I doubt I will find anything with the correct threads, the EGR has a very
fine thread. What do you think is the right stuff to seal the bolt? Should
I use epoxy, or would JB Weld work better? Any thoughts on thread size would
be appreciated, or mail me your old EGR valve from a 1500 Midget! I need to
fix it permanently before MGs on the Rocks this Saturday.
