It is difficult to talk about speed when relating to aircraft. There is the
speed over the ground the speed of the aircraft in the air (the 2 are
different, eg with a strong tail wind) and the Mach number (forget how this
works), and best not to forget that the speed of sound varies with air
density/temperature or whatever.
As far as the fire goes the latest talk is that it was a fuel line that
sprayed the fuel into the exhaust rather than an engine failure. I would
guess that without the full amount of fuel reaching the engines they might
not produce full power.
