You will get as many answers to that question as there are opinions on here.  
 An old mechanic, well versed in British Cars, and one to whom I listen 
closely, stresses to me to  only use White Lithium Grease to coat gaskets.  I 
tried it and it worked very well, at least as long as  using silicone or 
other goops.  One of his points is that it makes disassembly easier, which is 
true.
