Al-
Can you measure the cylinder head thickness of your original head? (Easily
done) Can you measure the cylinder head thickness of the installed head?
Much tougher to do, I know, but that would tell you IF signicant shaving
was done...
I don't think you have a shaved head problem. I would bet it's something
else. Some things to think about ... Did it start as well as it used to?
Fire right up? Much higher compression, high enough that it would cause
significant pinging, wouldn't affect the start-ability of the engine. In
fact, as long as the starter could still turn it over quickly enough, it
should start EASIER.
Or was it hard to start? If so, then the pinging is caused by something
else...Is it possible you have a significant vaccuum leak?
Other things burning will also cause pinging... I had a Big Healey once
that had a leaky brake booster that would then allow brake fluid to be
sucked into the intake manifold and "burned", producing LOTS of smoke and
pinging...
Burned automatic transmission fluid will also ping like crazy... What do
you use to top up your carb dampers? Is it possible they got WAY over-filled?
Any other changes to the engine or settings besides the cylinder head swap?
