Apparently it is 40 years to the day that Gary Powers was shot down over
Russia in his U2 aircraft. Although this pre-dates my birth I am sometimes
interested in this kind of stuff.
It turns out that Gary wrote an account of the entire episode and his
subsequent release. Does anyone know if this account is a whole book or
anything? I ask because today on the radio there was a 15 minute broadcast
(of which I missed the beginning) of his flight which includes him seeing an
aircraft flying at a supersonic speed below him during his last flight, the
impact and subsequent break up of the aircraft and his fall to earth by
parachute.
Do any listers recall how long after this incident it was before it was
reported in newspapers?
