I've taken the entire wiper mechanism out of the car, cleaned it,
reassembled it and it works fine. Its a pain the a** to get out the parts
behind the dash, but it can be done. The wiper motor and gearing is rather
simple to strip and rebuild with new grease.
The worm shaft that passes through the behind-dash tube and the tubes
themselves can only be throughly cleaned out of the car. A light greasing
before returning to the re-assembled, cleaned out) tubes helps a lot. The
grease on that shaft was very old and dry.
