Hi, and welcome!
>a. Was the spare tire fastened to the floor somehow? I cant find any
>evidence of this, back in that dark hole.
Others have told you there are two loops in the back and one in front. I
just use cheap nylon straps you can get almost anywhere with buckles. You
need two one goes on the two rear loops ( put this one on before putting in
the tire) leave it as loose as you can get it. Put in the tire and pull
the strap over the top and adjust the length with the buckle so it ends up
over the middle of the tire in kind of a "V"
. Put the other strap through the front loop and the middle of the other
strap and tighten it down.
>b. I dont have an original jack. (help?) Can I use a scissors jack with a
>wood block and jack below the original jack point?
Original jacks are for show they don't work very well. I use an old VW bug
pipe jack the has been ground down a little to fit in the original jack
hole. Frank and others use a VW Rabbit jack, it has a slot that will fit
in any of the seams under the car and the crank handle is built on so you
won't loose it.
When putting the car on
>a shop lift, jack pads go on A-arms and rear axle?
I assume you mean a "Floor jack" rear axle under the pumpkin is fine put
your jack stands under the front of the plate where the springs attach. In
the front I use the crosspiece in front of the engine, a small 1" thick
board will keep you from bending up the sheet metal, but look first as it
probably has already been beat up and a little more won't hurt. The jack
stands go either on the two "rails" where they come out of the body when
pulling the motor for clearance for the cherrypicker. Otherwise a little
futher out on the body at the firewall is fine.
>c. I foolishly(?) would like to use the car for mini trips (Im in
Florida);
>is there any easy way to have your "goods" and tools secured in the "dark
>hole" so as to maybe have them still there when you return from
sightseeing?
>Like a locking door or some such other system which would slow down an
>amateur thief?
This one is harder, I have a vinyl covered panel that is hinged at the top
and has my stereo speakers on it. Drops down to cover the hole and when you
push it up the magnets in the speakers will hold it up to the top of the
boot for you. Also if you have a tonneu cover you can leave it attached in
the back and fold it under behind the seats so it covers the "black hole"
out of sight out of mind ( besides the crooks will be so confused when they
try to pop the trunk lid with their screwdriver, they will walk away in
disgust.)
>d. The battery, as supplied, is the size of a yard tractor battery, while,
>of course the compartment is huge. What is battery number that is correct
>and or fills the hole?
Group 24 is fine the terminals are reversed on the 24F so pick the one that
works best for you, away from the firewall is best as frank said. Which
battery you pick depends on if you are running Pos or Neg ground. A cheap
plastic marine battery case from Sears that is made for the group 24's will
keep you from increasing the size of the holes in the battery tray (ask how
I know it has holes already) just throw away the top or you can use it for a
prts tray when working on the car.
>e. If I have done this posting improperly, please excuse.
Sorry "I can't" if you don't include some non LBC content I will ask the
list to ban you for life. Next time be sure to include something about
beer, dogs, cats, the fact that somebody hates the word threads, batman,
witches, or come up with your own non LBC. ( this complies with the above,
because it is non LBC). Don't take anything I say serious unless it is
about bug-i's, and maybe not even then. "And never ask me about front wheel
bearings or tell me the tapered roller bearing won't work". ( this complies
with my need to include something controversial).
Again welcome and have fun on the list and with your car.
Crash
ps. you will get two copies of this, that means I posted a copy to the
list, just in case somebody wants to tell me I'm full of male bovine fecial
material.
