Hey all.

I went to that tranny tech session on Saturday. We had a great time. We
rebuilt two MGB gearboxes with overdrives. An early unit, and a later unit.
I learned a ton. That poor mechanic probably still has my questions echoing
around in his head. As for list members, Rich Boris, and Mike Robson from
the MGS list were there.

Anyway, on to the question. I brought a spare 1500 tranny I just bought
(cheap, i.e. shipping ($28) to have him check it out before swinging it into
my car as my syncro's are shot. Turns out the unit was bad. The reverse
idler gear was all chewed up, as well as the matching part of the laygear.
He said a complete rebuild with all new bearings, syncros, and heavy duty
gearing would cost $575. The heavy duty gearing was for the reverse idler,
and the lay gear, and all the forward gears. He showed me the difference
between a new regular lay gear, and the heavy duty one. The teeth were all
much thicker. After he thought about it for a while, it occurred to him
that he had a brand new (read: NEVER USED) heavy duty box from a Morris (I
think it was a Morris). He said it was identical to the 1500 box, but had a
different input shaft. He said he could use the input shaft from the box I
gave him, and give me the new unit for the same price. $575. He also said
I could send him the used unit in my car for another $75 off. What do you
think? I already gave him a deposit, but I'm sure I could get it back.

Any opinions?

Mike
