This, we learned the hard way. Back in 92? I had just gotten the 3000 out of
the shop and was going to drive it to the 40th Healey Conclave in
Breckinridge. On the way from Spfd MO to Joplin to meet my brother in law,
things didn't seem right. We opted to play it safe, and drove his 72 Midget
out instead. He had just installed a new valve cover and cap in addition to
some performance mods. Before we got to KC MO the oil pressure was doing a
dive, and upon checking, found we were really low on oil. So, we added
oil...and continued to add oil every 60 miles on the way out there. The
State of Kansas sent us a special commendation for voluntarily re-oiling
I-70, thus saving the state vast tax dollars. Wal-Mart also gave us "special
customer" status, as we didn't pass a single Wal-Mart without stopping to
purchase another case of oil (the trick being finding places to stash a case
of oil in an already packed Midget). As an added benefit, the car got a
great underbody rust proofing as part of the deal. Anyway, the culprit
turned out to be... you guessed it... a vented cap. Changed the cap in
Breckinridge to non-vented, and drove home (about 800 miles) with no further
additions to the crankcase...
