It was a coil that was designed to not have a resitor in the circuit.  And
there isn't one.  I think it's just a defective unit.

I'm not sure about the miss in #2, but regarding your coil, if it burned out
after only 500 miles, maybe there should be a ballast resistor put in, as
its purpose is to keep too much current from reaching the coil after the car
has been started.
