If you look on the back of the fuel gauge and notice that the two
connections are labeled "B" and "T", then the gauge itself is probably bad,
as you apparently have the type that should not have the wires switched
around or it will damage your sender, and the gauge should work properly
regardless of whether you are using (+) or (-) ground.  Like Frank said,
just make sure that the "T" terminal connects to the sender, not the
battery.  If there are no markings on the two terminals on the back of the
fuel gauge, then you probably have the ammeter type gauge, and the wires can
be reversed without frying the sender.
