Once a Spridget backfires one time thru the carbs, the spring on the
button loose their temper and cause the idle to go up and down on it's
own.

Only your fingers if you touch the soldering iron.

Snip off the spring, the button will drop off, solder the 3 holes and
file smooth.
Now you have a pre pollution carb. 
This was a very popular modification in the 70s. Most SUs I get from
parts cars of that time have already been soldered up. Some crude, some
well done.
