ric- the problem sounds like your brushes wore out. The gradual
deterioration of the charge indicates an ever decreasing contact or
coupling. Try spinning the alternator by hand (after removing the belt), If
it sounds raspy, then your bearings are shot for sure. Replacing the brushes
shouldn't be too hard. Don't know myself, never touched a LUCAS alternator.
