Peter,
I will half-answer this and at the same time solicit help from others on
the list.
In a nutshell, it is my understanding that the cars were shipped with
black shocks. The shocks in other colors were Armstrong
Factory replacement units whose color indicated the Armstrong factory
from which they came.
Disclaimer: I am not familiar with HAN-8 cars and on so this information
may vary for the later cars.
