It has to be spring steel to "hold" regular wire will not work (for long) Find a suitable spring, straighten it out, rebend the ends to form a clip, you may have to heat it up to keep the bends formed, to not heat the whole thing or you will loose the spring tempering and turn it back into a piece of wire.
