My original post was made out of frustration with, as Frank said, being treated
like a number. Obviously, everyone's mileage may vary. I get the same kick
out of guys like Skip at Shadetree and Greg at BPNW as I get out of a car with
no windows and a pull starter. I still have to patronize the Biggies on
occasion because sometimes there is no choice. Whenever possible, I get my
espresso at a little place from a guy named Nunzio who knows the house in Italy
where my grandfather was born. I've also been forced to hit the machine at
7-11 on occasion as well. Given the choice, I hate franchises. Around here, I
have to hit Pep Boys and deal with questions like "Who makes MG?" because they
are the only game in town (along with AutoZone and 2 other chains). They all
swooped in and put the mom and pops out of business, and that stinks. Don't
even start me on Wal-Mart. We studied them while getting my MBA and suffice it
to say ol' Sam was not exactly a sweet guy. Avoid franchises for a week - you
might like it.
