Hi Chas,
I had a similar problem, and found the threads on the jet bearing stripped
in a way that allowed me to think I was leaning the mixture when I wasn't. 
You probably would have seen it during your rebuild, though.  I'd change
the bearing anyway - as I recall it was only a few dollars.   I'm sure
someone on the list will have a more elegant solution.
