My knowledge doesn't cover the time period requested - but hopefully the
following will help a bit

Spitfire was originally line fitted with Dunlop 'Gold Seal' and later Dunlop
C41 - both cross-ply types. Dunlop SP61 radials were a line fitted optional
extra.
Sometime around 1968/69, US spec cars had Goodyear G800 white or blackwalls
fitted as standard. Other markets went to Dunlop SP68. ISTR the G800 had a
noticeable firmness about it and the chunky ttread pattern made it far noisier
than the Dunlop. Roadholding was about equal, though the Goodyear gave no
warning when it 'broke.' On the Dunlop. you could feel the backend starting to
slide and adjust driving accordingly. Many owners in Europe upgraded their
tyres to Michelin X and Pirelli Cinturato. Both gave dramatically improved
handling but when the time came for 'breakaway' - a high speed Spitfire was
not unlike handling an angry Rottweiler
Cars for overseas territories (Africa & Middle East etc) had wider section
tyres and wheels - 5.20 up to 5.50 with additional heavy duty suspension,
larger radiators, cooler stats and an engine skid plate
My .02p's worth
