Contact cement is great if (as you say) it is applied properly. Most
people glom it on and leave large puddles which never sets properly
before the veneer is applied. A thin coat on both surfaces allowed to
dry properly and then applied with a veneer roller to properly adhere
the surfaces will stay indefinitely without pulling up.

Most problems with contact cement manifest themselves in lumps below the
surface. Those lumps are bubbles of uncured cement.
