This looks interesting, Does anyone out there know what a "ford type 9 5
speed transmission" is. Is there a US equivalent? (Maybe the BW T-5?)

Take a look at http://www.autogear.co.uk/spitfire.html for a commercial
5-speed conversion. They say this will work for any 1300 or 1500 Spit. (I
have no experience with this company but ran across it while searching for
an OD gearbox for my 1500.)
