The old MK2 engine is only 1147 cc and has siamesed intake ports. The
later engine is a 1296 displacement with a better breathing 4 port intake
head (but some say comparatively weak bottom end bearings if its a big
bearing 1296). But your engine numbers don't make sense. The sound more
like commission numbers which would place the engines as a MK3 and an early
MK4 - if that's the case go with the mark 3 - the FD (engine) would
indicate a MK3 and the FH isn't any (engine) number I am familiar with but
the commission number would indicate it as an early MK4. Maybe somebody
else has a better scope on numbers. In any case the later engine is the
better choice for max power -
As far as the springs - go with the later 5 leaf or commonly called Swing
spring - be sure to use the larger roll bar with this spring also - If you
opt for the older fixed spring - by all means put a camber compensator on
it!
