The direction he's going works nicely for this. In that the later
non-od driveshaft is the same length as the earlier od. So, he doesn't
have to change driveshafts at all (same part number even these days).

One other issue is the length of the drive shaft. The earlier trannies
(Pre MkIV) were shorter than the later ones and depending on what
exactly you
are going to do, you might find that the drive shaft doesn't fit.
