The math is straight forward enough to determine the results.  It's also not 
going to result in a radical change in spring rate, since there are so many 
coils.

The latter is dicey because it is a hit or miss proposition at best.  It's like 
Forrest Gump's box of candy, "You never know what you'll get!".  But it is a 
much cheaper way to go if you are on a tight budget.
