Hi Frank,
No, you should be able to get a good seal provided the gasket is still in
serviceable condition. Remember, that the sending unit will fit in the
opening in more than one position, but you'll only be able to achieve the
proper seal if it's in the "correct" position. If the gasket is worn, replace
it. No dressings or sealers should be necessary at all.
