Bill,
I am assuming your car has a full synchro 3-rail gearbox.  I think the previous 
emailer was assuming that you were referring to a
single rail gearbox.

The following refers to the full synchro 3-rail:

Non-OD gearboxes have a switch that controls the backup lights.  The switch is 
located under the shifter linkage at the back of the top
cover.  This switch is identical to the one used on the single rail to control 
the overdrive gear selcection (to keep it from going
into OD when in 1st or 2nd gear).

When there is an overdrive added to the 3 rail gearbox, the gear selector 
switch is an add-on that is actuated by the gear select rail
where it goes through the front of the gear selector assembly.
