Timing Question??

How do I check the timing on my Spit? Do I need to buy a timing light? What
should the correct timing be on a 1969 1296 MK3 motor with Dual HS2 Carbs? I
would really appreciate some detailed instructions on how to do this if some
one is willing to take the time to type them up.
