O/D on a Spit is meant to be used in 3rd and 4th - says so right in my
owner's manual. I find that with mine I tend to shift 1-2-3-3O/D-4O/D and
skip 4th direct when accelerating to highway speed up an onramp. Otherwise
3O/D is very useful at around town speeds - 35-45mph or so - 3rd is too low
and 4th is a little too high. Plus it is easier to flip the switch than to
shift the lever as traffic speeds up/slows down. The fact that I have a
"breathed on" 1296 with relatively little low rpm grunt probably makes this
more of an issue than if I had a stock 1500 though.

For the slippage, you can probably just replace the seals and be fine. Try
changing the oil too.
