WHA? HUH? HEYYYYYYYY! So, it's NOT JUST ME? In a perverse way, I'm
really, REALLY glad to hear this. Let's me know that I'm not insane and
that maybe, just maybe, it's a manufacturing spec tolerance thing. I guess
the top and cover must be perfectly matched or at least darn close?

Like I said before, I feel like it's off just a few 1000ths of an inch or
something. I could get first to work with the cover on, but had to adjust
the position of the cover by that amount in order to get the bolts in and
moving it just that tiny fraction caused 1st to lock up with reverse again.

The good news is that the lister who so generously swapped me the Mk3 cover
for my Mk2 cover is sending my old cover back, PLUS an additional Mk3 cover
that he has. I'll try the alternate Mk3 cover first and hope that it does
the trick.

I was telling Joe Curry off list that I have the feeling that I could solve
this problem if I could SLIGHTLY bend the reverse lever so that when the
cover was on, the reverse gear would be pushed back just a fraction farther
into its pocket. However, I don't know if I can remove the lever without
pulling the whole transmission and even if I could, the whole proposition
sounds too risky on a few different levels and probably isn't worth trying.
I'll just hold out for a few days and hope that the other cover works, or
that at least, I can get my original cover back on and just forego the
reverse lamps for the time being. I loved having them work, but I love
starting off a stop light or a busy intersection with first gear working
even more...

Cheers,

Jeff in San Diego
