Bill,

I'll defer to you there as I don't have a lot of experience with the type of
axles that the Spitfire uses. I'm just hesitant to toss something that could
be troublesome to replace (like most LBC parts). My main point was that there
are specialty shops out there that can fix things, replacement is not
necesarily the only option.

Thanks,

Hi Doug,
You should have zero play in your u-joints-all four of them. Chances R if
you have that much play in your yokes, the bearings in your rear axle
trunnions are shot as well. It would probably be much cheaper to look for
used replacements axles unless the flange yoke is the only bad one. In that
case just replace the flange. Also remember, you probably have the shorter
axles of the Mk1-MkIV. You could probably replace them with the longer ones,
73-up, but I'm not positive. Both sides have to be the same. The shorter
ones measure 20 1/2 inches from axle end to flange end, and the longer ones
21 1/2 inches. There was a guy in Morton, IL that had some shorter ones for
sale on the VTR page. I don't remember his name, but I image his ad might
still be there. I'd shoot him a price of $100-150 for the pair if you get
the drums, wheel cylinders etc.
Paul,
I'm not sure what you mean by "balancing the axles." I know the drive shaft
can be balanced, but I haven't head of balancing the axles. How is that
done? You can make sure they are straight and if not, they might as well be
pitched.
