8-tracks were around before the 70's, as was FM. In fact, (I know this because I had them in my '65 Bug!), they were quite often installed as a hang-on underdash unit. If you were really well off, they were combined into a single unit. Ah, the days of reveling in the sound of a 3" sunbaked speaker driven by a massive 3 watts! Cheers, Andy H. ps.
