I have my own ideas based on fuel delivery.   

When inspecting the fuel filter for sediment, also check the rubber fuel
lines. They could be bad.   (Remember there is a 4" section on the frame,
near the left rear wheel, that is often overlooked.)

Also since you have a '79 that has a non vented fuel system, make sure the
vent hoses, that run up the right side of the frame to the charcoal
canister, are sound and not plugged.   You should not hear pressure/or
vacuum releasing when you pop the fuel filler cap.

Of course, that new fuel pump could have fallen apart on you.  On 9/11 Bob
Sykes explained what happens:
