I just had the exact same experience, only it was cylinder #2 (exhaust also).
The head is currently off because the intake valve was stuck open on the same
cylinder. The only thing that I came up with for a cause is the fact that the
locknut on the rocker arm was very loose when I checked mine. I suspect that
the DPO did not tighten it enough when he adjusted the valves last causing the
adjustment screw to loosen up and allow the push rod to fall off. I have only
had my spit since November (also a '73 1500) and had not messed with the
valves. I got my gasket kit today, so its time to put it all back together.
Wish me luck. One thing that I noticed on my problem was that I was getting
oil in the carb. Might want to check it out on yours, if it is a simiar
problem, it could need some cleaning.
