I've had a vent-free natural gas fireplace for more than 10 years. Run it a
lot all winter. Never had any soot on the ceiling. So if installed
properly I don't know why you'd have a problem, particularly if its vented.
The one's designed for a vent run a little sootier to get a prettier flame.
I'd check that the vent/chimney is clear/open. As mentioned, set up for
wrong fuel could also be the problem.
