For the last week or so the clothes dryer has been making a noise,
a sort of screeching, scraping type of sound. I finally get around
to investigating. I clean up the area around it, get the stuff off
the top and so on, drag it out to where I can access the back panel.

Drat. No back panel, the body of the dryer wraps around the sides and
the back. How to get to the works, I wonder. As I'm standing there
looking at it my wife comes downstairs to inform me of another problem.
One of the computers won't connect to the network. That is easily fixed,
we had a guest over the weekend who used the wire for his laptop. So I
run up and plug the proper wire into the proper port on that computer.

Network fixed. The network - aha! I google for 'Maytag dryer
teardown' and minutes later the noise problem has been fixed. Too bad
I didn't do the web search *before* pulling the appliance out in the
open, all access is through the easily removed *front* panel. The
screws weren't exactly visible, but they weren't really hidden,
either. I could have done the whole job a lot faster and not gotten
nearly as dirty if I had known. So it goes.

The noise was a result of my occasional work with a friend doing HVAC
work, since I still don't have a real job[1]. About a week ago I was the
one up on the roof putting the flashing around the new flue, and had
put some extra screws in my pocket as insurance against dropping one.
Sure enough, one of them, a 2 incher, was stuck in my pants pocket
until the pants got into the dryer, where the screw proceeded to come
out of the pocket and wedge itself against the drum - screech and squeal!
Screw removed, dryer is back to normal.
