Normalizing is a term for Post Weld Heat Treatment.
The AWS (American Welding Society) is on record
as not recommending/requiring PWHT on 4130
structures with wall thicknesses less then 1/2 inch thick.
This means cages for the rest of us.
"Brittle failures" of cage tubes from bad welding
isn't really happening in the real world. What we see are
poorly designed cages exhibiting tube failures outside the
weld heat affected zone. Nobody seems to take the time to
run the numbers on the failed cages, but when you do,
you find that they failed as predicted by analysis.
