So with a bit of searching I finally found some info on the air-cooled VW
engine air compressor

Seems like a good alternative to a 500lb monster that just sits in the
corner of a workshop!  If you put the motor back in the VW, you'll even have
a weatherproof housing for your new compressor ;-)
