there are some exotic tire compounds where the polymers are such that the
oxygen can leak out faster than the nitrogen, leading to changes in air
pressure over extended runs.
if you use shop air in tires (that is to say, air with water in it), then
tire pressure can change in annoying ways as the tires come up to
temperature, which a race driver can find very disturbing (good drivers can
sense 1 to 2 psi variations in tire pressures.)
