I have one of those. I'm happy with it, but despite its size it's
still a "hobby" compressor. It won't run an air die grinder or disc
sander continuously. It *almost* keeps up, but after about five minutes
you have to give it a minute or so to get its breath back. Since that's
about as long as I go at a continuous stretch it's okay with me. For
serious grinding, body work, or sandblasting it might be annoying.
-> pointed out that it's very inefficient because it takes 6 HP to only
-> deliver 10 SCFM @ 90PSI. The two-stage compressors (which cost twice
Well, sorta. The "6 HP" is an outright lie. Even a Taiwan 6 hp motor
would cost more than what the whole compressor sells for. "Compressor
duty" motors are rated differently, like "music power" watts vs. RMS
watts. Compared to a motor you'd buy at Grainger's or an electric shop
you're looking at, oh, maybe a little over 1hp.
The major problem I had with my Campbell-Hausfeld was the wiring. The
"6 HP" motor is 220v only, and I had to get 220v through forty feet of
underground cable from the house to the shed where the compressor is.
-> the one that I am looking at will cost me a lot more money in the
-> long run because of the increased electric bill.
*Months* will go by between times I use the compressor. Sometimes I'll
do without because it takes so long to fill the 60 gallon tank and the
100 feet or so of 1" air pipe in the shop. I doubt it makes any
noticeable dent on the electric bill even when I use it a lot, though.
If I were to buy another compressor, given the $400 or so I spent for
this one, I'd look for something with a *smaller* tank and a bigger
compressor. I still can't justify spending the money for a big two
stage job.
