I must agree with Norman: when the brakes are properly set up, they are one of
the most remarkable features of the Mk VI and R-Type cars. They are easily
adjusted, and should not fade. I used to travel down the Clyde Mountain in New
South Wales on the coastal mountain range regularly, and used the brakes
probably too much, but fade was not a problem. This mountain is the yardstick,
with many hairpin bends and a constantly steep grade. I have suffered brake
fade in lesser cars with disc brakes there many times.
How steep: the trip up the mountain sees many older cars (eg 2.8 litre Holdens
and Fords, and just about every English car with three gears) in first gear, and
boiling motors are still very often seen on modern cars with sound cooling
systems in winter, let alone summer, but the R-Type only ever suffered fuel
vaporisation. The fuel vaporisation is fixed by lagging the low-pressure fuel
line (before the pumps, especially above the RHS exhaust near the fuel tank).
One colleague converted his system to a constant flow fuel supply, with a
pressure-operated bypass valve returning fuel to the tank to keep the fuel cool.
The braking weakness I experienced was that if the servo were contaminated,
usually from road grime and water, the servo could give up very quickly and the
brakes would not work enough. This only happened to me once, and once was
enough. Then I was at a low enough speed to engage second speed (auto trans)
and the servo recovered enough to get me to the house at the beach, where I
removed the servo and cleaned it enough for the 100 miles back home where I
replaced the servo lining. After then, I regularly service the servo and
replace the servo seal each time, and have improved the exterior sealing flap to
prevent water ingress.
Regards,
Richard.

Subject: disk brakes
I am very interested after working on these cars
for about 40 years, if everything is correct, one thing
they have is good brakes. It sounds as though you have
more serious problems and the brakes are not set up
correctly.
Richard Treacy seems to have covered most of the points,
but disk brakes will not effect the cure if the system is not correctly
set up. I have yet to see anybody have brake fade in spite of a drum
system and all disks are not free of this vice.

Norman
