Hallo George,
I can tell you 100% : the UE5053 (I think) steel S1 gasket does fit. You must
indent it as I previously explained, but I have fitted at least half a dozen of
them without problem. Parts guys rely on data sheets, not first hand experience
usually (I mean that in the kindest sense). The c-a gasket from an R-Type fits
straight on to an S1: I gave one to a friend in need, and it is fine.
Try Appleyard Leeds, or Brian Thompson at Warboys, Hunts. I buy my parts
normally from England, but the price now seems a little high if what you say is
correct. I had a beautifully made replica hand made in Sydney once for A$25
(GBP 10) - someone around Birmingham could make some to pattern. I have a
jealously guarded store of C-a and steel gaskets in Canberra. I could give you
a secondhand one of each to prove, but the steel gaskest only seal once; c-a can
be reused, but I have never tried this.
If you don't believe me that an S1 gasket fits, I'll bet my car against yours !

Dear Richard,
Further to our interchange of the other week, does the S1 head gasket
truly fit the R-type (Barclays and Infocar claim it does not)?
This might be an academic question as their gaskets seemed to be
available (at the moment) only as copper/asbestos anyway.
By the way, they are now an amazing =A3130 over here!
