My father-in-law bought it in 1971 out of an estate sales of a gentleman who
owned a brewery in Edinborough and had bought the car new. Due to my
father-in-law's failing health, the car hasn't been driven in a couple of
years. Before that it was driven a few times a month. We started it Labor
Day weekend, but it appeared to have a raditor leak after it warmed up and
we shut it off before driving it. Over the years I have driven the car
several times. It has a Park Ward body and I think that it is very
handsome. Everything is original, but with the wear level, it probably
needs restoration. The brakes need redone; they have always been poor. I
seem to remember that the transmission was too loose. There are dings on
the body and there are several different shades of the original charcoal
gray. Our plan is to finish the real estate project that we are currently
involved in (an intown residence and two loft apartments) before we bring
the car to our home in Atlanta. The car has great sentimental value to my
wife and me.
Incidentally, my father-in-law had three R/Rs: a 1984 Spirit, the 1954
Silver Wraith, and a 1930 PII dual cowl touring car (rebodied in the 50s or
60s by Frank Dale and Stepsons). The PII is a magnificent car in Oxford and
Cambridge blue. Both the Silver Wraith and the PII were always dependable
and fun to drive around in the country and small town where he lived. From
day one, my wife and I have considered the Silver Wraith our car and for the
last ten years have had right of first refusal if the car were for sale.
The PII is much too serious a car for me -- both as a drive-around car as
well as the mechanics of driving the car from the starting procedure to the
straight cut gears. I always enjoyed the PII most when driving behind it
and watching in motion across the countryside. I guess kinda like railroad
fans like to see trains going down the tracks. The car will be in good
hands with my brother-in-law who is an engineer and loves all things
mechanical. I just like using things not fixing them.
