I recall there being a big difference regarding one type absorbing water 
vs the other ( DOT 5 I think ) not doing so. From postings I would guess 
that 3/4 of the people who own old, large military trucks use 'DOT 3' 
and the others DOT 5.

I did run across one FAQ at a lubricant companies site which explains 
the differences pretty well.
