My guess is that you have a bad solder connection somewhere.  When the set 
heats up, it opens, when you turn it off, it reconnects.  Tubes usually give 
the 
opposite problem, takes them a minute to warm up then they work fine.

I have restored around 50 radios if you need someone to take a look at it.
