I've also had a lot of luck with electrolysis de-rusting (using a battery 
charger for power)...it's particularly good with small parts. Tip: old beat up 
stainless trim rings make terrifc donor anodes for the de-rusting process.

The most under-rated, but almost as effective but simpler/safe method is 
immersion in white vinegar. The stuff costs about 70cents a gallon and lasts 
for 
considerable period...just drop you're heavily rusted piece(s) into  the 
vinegar and the next morning brush off the rust with a soft brush and rinse 
with 
water, (you do need to prime immediatly a surface rust will reappear in 
minutes).
